The misconception that romantic love only belongs to the young seems to dominate a lot of the content we consume, leaving the idea that as we age, we somehow lose the ability to experience meaningful connection or change.
Later Daters - Netflix’s delightful new series - has completely shattered this narrative – and if you haven’t seen it yet, you’re in for a treat.
This show has a simple premise: older adults in their 60s and 70s looking for love after years of going it alone. It is a beautiful reminder that age is just a number when it comes to personal growth, connection, and—yes—finding new love. And that’s exactly what we need sometimes—reminders that it’s never too late to start over, to take risks, or to open your heart again.
As I binged through the episodes, I found myself feeling this immense sense of warmth, like I was wrapped up in the show’s cosy, heartfelt energy. The characters are vibrant, funny, intelligent, emotionally willing to learn, and real. They have wit, they have passion, and most importantly, they have hope.
For anyone who has ever doubted the possibility of finding love at any stage in life, this show is a beacon. It gently challenges the idea that only the young can experience those butterflies, the excitement of a first kiss (Big Willie's still got some moves!), or the deep connection of a long-term partnership.
Watching these characters navigate their own vulnerabilities was a powerful reminder of the universal human desire to feel seen, valued, and loved.
As a therapist, I often work with clients who feel as though they’ve missed their chance at certain aspects of life—whether it’s finding love, making career changes, or pursuing their dreams. Society tends to push this narrative that once we hit a certain age, we should settle into a quiet, predictable existence.
Later Daters challenges that.
It offers a space where personal reinvention isn’t just possible, it’s celebrated.
What stood out to me most was how the show doesn't shy away from the realities of aging—physical changes, the loss of loved ones, and the struggles that come with that—but it also shows that there’s so much beauty in the second chances we get to create fulfilling lives–if we are open to it.
Watching the characters come into their own, whether it’s through finding a partner or simply learning to be comfortable in their own skin again, was honestly inspiring.
And here’s the thing: Later Daters isn’t just about love, but about self-love.
One of the show’s most touching aspects is how the characters learn to appreciate themselves more fully.
They’re not defined by their past, their mistakes, or even their age—they’re learning to be present, to be happy with who they are right now. And to not settle. And I think that’s a message that’s truly universal, no matter what stage of life you’re in.
If there’s one thing that I took away from the show, it’s that we should all be willing to step outside of the boxes that confine us, to take risks, and to embrace new experiences. Whether you’re 25 or 75, it’s never too late to put yourself out there, to discover new parts of yourself, or to find joy and love in unexpected places.
Watching Later Daters gave me hope that no matter where we are in life, there’s always room for growth and connection. It made me reflect on the ways we limit ourselves because of societal expectations. And just like the characters on the show, we can all have our own reinvention stories—no matter how old we are.
If you haven’t watched it yet, I highly recommend it.
It’s the perfect warm hug for the soul and a reminder that life’s adventures aren’t over—they’re just beginning.
